Block Watch problems plague family in Laveen

Problems with Block Watch in Laveen have gone public...so sad. Rebecca has been banned from attending block watch meetings, banned from the block watch web pages and banned from block watch events because the leader of her block watch has personal problems with her. I share her story only because I too, have been a victim of this block watch leaders tyrades and am no longer willing to sit back and watch others go through her bullying.

If you are experiencing problems with your Block Watch Leaders, you can form your own Block Watch or petition to remove the current board. A Block Watch can be 2 homes or 200. If you are interested in starting a block watch, contact your local police precinct for information.

I live in the Red Hawk at Rodgers Ranch community and had some kids jump the wall that faces the field at 51st ave tonight to get in my back yard while i was at home. I did not hear anything or catch them but they did damage to my patio furniture trying to get into my hot tub! This has been going on for 2 years the same 4 african american kids getting in my back yard to have a party. Now they are brave enough to do it while I and my family are home. Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? I have called the police and everytime they treat me as if I am the criminal!

- Nabeel Get a shotgun for protection. They are trespassing. Or a get very protective attack dog. I would not tolerate it and I would approach with extreme force especially if authorities seem to take this imminent danger lightly.

- Rebecca Lynna, Barbed wire is in our plans! We will also be installing motion sensor lights to help deter them! I think it is very sad to have to go to such extremes to protect our home from teenage boys who can't stay away. For the past 2 years they have been coming and partying in our hot tub while we are gone, I don't like it but I still felt safe in my home, now they are coming while we are at home and it scares the crap out of me as to what is next. The police just brushed it off and asked for my social security number , weight, height, and birthdate to be able to run my name, now I have nothing to hide but wouldn't you all fell as if you were being treated as a criminal if the officer was more worried about your info than the crime that was committed. I am a huge supporter of all law enforcement but I am loosing faith as to their ability to protect the community.

- Stephanie Scovell For one, everyone who reads this needs to go outside tonight and find the vulnerable spots in their own backyards and homes....this is a great reminder to using Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (keeping windows visible, blight free, lights on at night, blinds closed, etc). If I am patrolling and I can see your Wii and PS3, so can Joe Criminal...I can't stress enough the importance of being pro-active NOT REACTIVE....

I called the cops, they suggested i put signs up and within a day i got a text from "mom" saying her kids bought my puppies from someone at the liquor store in southern and asked for a reward...we text back and forth until she gave me her address and i called the cops backs...turned it was the same two officers that took my report...they went to the address which was at bella vista...they rescued my dogs, turned out two teens jumped my fence and took them. I didn't press charges but it was an option

- Ross We have two dogs. That always works. Also, the gun approach also works. But the #1 thing is being vigilant! It is VERY scary knowing you were at home and did not notice or hear anything in the backyard. The sticky wall also works. You also must get the neighbors involved too. Where I live we are always looking out for one another. Eyes and ears are so important.

- Stephanie Scovell What you are going through is not common. I posted a poll today about this very subject (exclusion by a block watch). I encourage you to continue to work with PD. If you have problems, ask for a shift supervisor and let them help you. If you have other residents in your community who are experiencing the same problems as you (with the block watch) you could always start your own or a petition to remove the current board.

- Holly Unfortunately, we are having troubles in our neighborhood too. I have police reports and was supposed to have a detective out - no word. I have called 4 times in the last week to get someone to finish this job, nothing has been returned. They are bullying our littler kids here and we get no help. I was actually told that if I press charges they would definitely retaliate on me.

Stephanie Scovell Take pics for evidence. Plant Bougainvillea or get cactus along the wall where the kids keep hopping the wall and think about getting a dog. Go online and order a dummy camera, get generic signs that say you have cameras recording and keep your lights on out back. Motion sensor lights out back will be a good deterrent too.

Rebecca to ‎Cao I left you a message at the number above. Please give me a call back at the home number I left on your voice mail. I will be at work all day tomorrow but my mother, Sherry Hendershot, who is the home owner will be home all day. I would greatly appreciate any help on this matter. We have not been able to catch these boys on camera but our neighbors have caught them climbing the wall this past summer and have thankfully stopped them. We are going to be installing cameras and if we have to further security measures in order to protect our family and backyard from these boys. I am very fearful that they are becoming so brave as to come even when we are home. Luckily my mother walked past the sliding door and scared them enough to leave. Any time we called the police this past summer to make a report we were treated as if we were the criminals, My entire family has no faith that the police can protect us after our experiences with them. It is so sad to say that but what are we to do?

Rebecca Manuel, I appreciate the offer to speak at our next meeting , but noone has been able to help me and my family on this matter in the past, even my block watch leader has blocked me from any notifications or crime alerts because I decided not to pick sides in her feud with a very close friend of mine. I do believe you know who I am refering to. I have had nothing but problems and my son has been harrassed by this person in the past to the point that I have no faith in my block watch. My mother was a member of PNP and that still does not help me either. The problems have stopped and I do not wish to engaged that kind of behavior again, that is why I do not wish to take advice from block watch. I do appreciate your concerns, but I will take my chances putting my own security measures in place.

Establishing new City Council Districts

Phoenix residents are encouraged to get involved in establishing new City Council districts as the city begins its effort to redraw lines to reflect the 2010 Census results. The city’s population has grown during the last 10 years and based on the new census data, the council districts will grow from 165,000 to approximately 180,000 residents.

Phoenix is required by the federal and state constitutions, as well as the city code, to redraw district lines every 10 years following each U.S. census. The city’s last redistricting process was completed in 2001, following the 2000 census.

A series of public meetings has been scheduled throughout the city to educate the community about the process, gather input to identify communities of interest, and receive feedback regarding changes to the boundaries. The kick-off to the series of meetings will be a technical workshop to provide an overview of the 2010 Census data and how it applies to the redistricting process, and to explain how the new online mapping tool works. The meetings are expected to last one hour and will include a formal presentation followed by a question-and-answer session. Your input is important, please attend the following meetings in District 7 or surrounding areas.

12-5 Limitations Of Actions

12-541 Malicious prosecution; false imprisonment; libel or slander; seduction or breach of promise of marriage; breach of employment contract; wrongful termination; liability created by statute; one year limitation

There shall be commenced and prosecuted within one year after the cause of action accrues, and not afterward, the following actions:

1. For malicious prosecution, or for false imprisonment, or for injuries done to the character or reputation of another by libel or slander.

2. For damages for seduction or breach of promise of marriage.

3. For breach of an oral or written employment contract including contract actions based on employee handbooks or policy manuals that do not specify a time period in which to bring an action.

4. For damages for wrongful termination.

5. Upon a liability created by statute, other than a penalty or forfeiture.

12-653.01 Definitions

In this article, unless the context otherwise requires:

1. "Actual malice" means that state of mind arising from personal spite, hatred, or ill will toward the plaintiff, but such a state of mind occasioned by a good faith belief on the part of the defendant in the truth of the libelous publication or broadcast at the time it is published or broadcast shall not constitute actual malice.

2. "Exemplary damages" means damages which may, in the discretion of the court or jury, be recovered in addition to general and special damages for the sake of example and by way of punishing a defendant who has made the publication or broadcast with actual malice.

3. "General damages" means damages for loss of reputation.

4. "Magazine" or "newspaper" means any publication which may be mailed at the second-class rates established by the United States post office.

5. "Special damages" means all damages which the plaintiff alleges and proves he has suffered in respect only to his property, business, trade, profession or occupation.

No one should have to put up with bullying or harrasment from another person, ever.

Attempted Child Abduction in Laveen

November 2, 2011

Dear Parents and Guardians of EAGLE Scholars,

I just wanted to take a moment and share with you that there was a predatory incident that occurred on the morning of November 1, 2011 involving a student at 41^st Ave. and Baseline on her way to school. A student was approached by a white male who tried to engage her in conversation. He was described as approximately 6 feet tall, 200 pounds and between 30 -35 years old. The police were notified and are currently investigating the incident. Since this incident occurred near EAGLE College Prep and EAGLE College Prep Harmony, we are notifying our families. Together, we can ensure that all of our students are safe.

To ensure the safety of all of our students, please review the following safety tips with your children:

§ Children should never walk alone. They should always walk in groups of 2 or 3 or with a parent or other trusted adult.

§ Students should report anyone suspicious to school personnel, their parents, or the police.

§ Remind your children never to talk to any strangers.

§ Teach your children to be aware that sometimes strangers will try luring them by promising them candy, ice cream, asking for help, saying they know their parents, etc.

§ If your child is approached by a stranger, tell your child to run to the nearest and safest place. If they are unable to do so, tell them to scream as loudly as possible.

§ If your children are home alone – remind them to keep the doors locked at all times, not to answer the door, not to say their parents aren’t home, and to keep the outside lights on in the evening.

Since our campus is a locked campus, please remember to sign-in at the front office in building 1 regardless of where you are going on campus (i.e. building 2 – Harmony, Grace Adventures, grades 4-6 at EAGLE). We must be vigilant about safety on our campus.

My resignation from the PNP program

For three years, I have loved my volunteering with the Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol. I joined, shortly after my own home was burglarized. Recently, another member of the PNP program saw fit to try to destroy my character. While other members of the community saw her behavior as irrational and problematic, the Phoenix Police Department didn't. They asked us both to step down from our positions, taking a break and re-evaluating the situation later on. This was moot, as the other person was set on destroying my reputation and taking over the PNP program.
Another family in the Laveen area was also victim to her brutality and rumors. They have done nothing wrong, yet, now they are being forced to consider moving out of their home, and seeking a restraining order.
My leaving the PNP program is difficult for me, but a must for Laveen. I will not allow the disruptions of one person to destroy the hard work of many. One person will not take away the sanctity of the PNP program. Her actions will speak loudly as I allow my reputation and character to speak for itself.
All PNP matters are now being handled by Officer Kristyna Peter of Estrella Mountain Precinct.

TSA, like it or not, they are here to stay

September 11 was a horrible tragic day. Since then, we have seen many changes to our Airport Security, namely, TSA. Where we used to be able join loved ones at the gate as they prepared to fly, we now must say goodbye at the Security Checkpoint...Where we used to be able to take water bottles, we must now purchase them after we have stripped our shoes, stood in front of a machine that can see through our clothes or go through a jail like pat down...while some are still lucky enough to be able to go through the metal detector. For me, going to the airport is a true nightmare. I must now use a wheelchair and have an implanted pacemaker. I don't get the luxury of going through the noninvasive metal detector, no. I get to be pat down, which if you never have been is a lot like being molested, and is extremely uncomfortable. I know that it must be done for security purposes, but what purpose does it serve if someone is able to get on a plane with a taser?

There was a woman who went through the TSA pat down, being black is neither here nor there to me, but it was to TSA, apparently, as they made her take her hair down, out of the ponytail to search her. If I were her, the ACLU, NAACP and any other outlet that I could get to listen, would be on this like the proverbial white on rice.

When I was pat down, I wasn't given the option of the machine that can see through my clothes, which I would have gladly taken. I went to the airport in a tank top, shorts and flip flops. I didn't have a purse, just my ID, pass to get to the gate to get my son and my pacemaker implanted card and cell phone. I couldn't have been hiding anything. The woman that was patting me down, was rubbing my incision (just weeks after having had my pacemaker implanted) so hard that I cried out in pain. She told me to simmer down, to which she almost, I say this seriously, almost got punched!! My breasts were rubbed so hard I thought they were going to fall off, and let's just say, I had a wedgie by the time I was allowed to sit down and kick off my flip flops to show the bottom of my feet.

When I flew to Sacramento in February, I was given the option of the spatter X-ray...let's be real here folks, everyone knows what a naked body looks like. Not everyone knows how our individual naked bodies feel. I was so much happier to have the spatter X-ray, less invasive, no pain to my incision and no embarrasment about being pat down.

Has the TSA gone too far? When you consider that they are patting down small children and having the elderly remove their soiled undergarments, I say yes, but let's be real. There are some who would sacrifice a small child or elderly person to carry out their heinous act of terrorism on a plane. Do I agree with patting down small children? No, but again, this is where our world is right now. Could the TSA do better to check people and bags? Yes. Maybe what they need is better training. I would much rather have a police officer pat me down, than an old woman with a nasty attitude.

We all have our opinions on the TSA, but let's not also forget the horrible acts of September 11th. Let's not forget that while we may not enjoy the extreme security measure and having to pack large bottles of shampoo in our suitcases, we will be safer in the skies and should make our destinations without worry of being sacrificed by Osama Bin Laden's crew of mad men. I know that I will arrive in Hawaii in one piece to enjoy my vacation. I know that I can request the spatter X-ray, and not be molested like I was a year ago. Before you travel the friendly skies, do some research on the TSA by going to their website: www.tsa.gov and find out what is allowed on a plane, what you can do to make going through security a little easier and how to file a complaint should you feel that something was amiss during your interaction with them.

FROM A RESIDENT AT TRAILSIDE POINT BLOCK WATCH (W of 67th Ave, N of Baseline) Around noon today an unknown male was ringing my doorbell... When I came to the door I asked him what he wanted (without opening either front door) & he stated he was looking for a male named Justin. I advised him that there was no Justin here & he proceeded to ask if "Justin" lived in either of the houses next door to me.

(I shall add that the house to the north of me is vacant with a for sale sign & the house to the south was recently just moved into, but there is no appearance of anyone living in the house)

He was a White male in his 20's approx 508 150 slim build wearing a white baggy shirt, with baggy longer jean shorts with a black tee shirt on top of his head riding his bicycle.. He was last seen southbound from 74th Lane & St. Catherine. He did appear to be alone...

Criminals that are looking to do a "quick" residential burglary start by ringing the door bell to see if someone is home or not... When no one answers thats when they make their decision to break into the house by breaking our back arcadia doors... I know this as this same incident happened to me 2 months ago & was able to get two in custody...

My name is Shannon and I am the new program coordinator for the Emergency Assistance Program through The Salvation Army and I am contacting other agencies in the area to remind them of our program so that information can further be passed down to clients. Trailside Point Neighborhood Meeting Results

For those of you who were unable to attend the meeting last night, an update...

Councilman Michael Nowakowski of District 7 welcomed the audience. He spoke on the importance of coming together as a community to fight crime. He then introduced Commander M. Parra of Estrella Mountain Precinct, to discuss the shooting at the park and crime trends in Laveen. As of right now, the shooter who killed a young man at Trailside Point Park on May 9th is still free. Detective Cisneros of the Phoenix Police Department is the lead detective on the case and said that though many know who the shooter is, they are not talking to the Police. If you have information that may be pertinent to the case, you are asked to call him at 602.262.6141 in the Violent Crimes Unit. Commander Parra and Commander Crockett of South Mountain Precinct spoke of the importance of working together, getting to know your neighbors and calling the police when you see something suspicious. Commander Crockett also talked about the arrest of the Serial Rapist in the South Mountain area and the work it took to find the suspect. They also introduced their Community Action Officers, Ofc. Centenius Billingslea of Estrella and Ofc. Mayra Hawkins of South Mountain. They spoke on the importance of letting PD do their jobs and allowing them to work with the communities in fighting crime.

Rene Vera of Parks and Rec spoke about possible changes to the rules for the parks and expressed that this matter is being taken seriously by the City of Phoenix. David King and Don Adkins, members of the Block Watch, PNP and HOA in Trailside spoke about being a part of the community and the importance of working together to remove graffiti, joining the different committees with the HOA and being good witnesses to crime. Olga Soto from NSD spoke of the importance of contacting Graffiti Busters with graffiti and tagging and working with Blight Busters to curb blight in the communities, two things that often bring crime to the neighborhood. Stephanie Scovell spoke about the PNP program, and that everyone is already doing the PNP when they are out walking their dogs or strolling the park.

There were approximately 180-200 people on hand for the meeting, many from outside the Trailside Community, who expressed concern that PD work with MCSO in solving crimes and fighting them. Commander Parra assured the crowd that the PD does work with MCSO and that the Precinct would continue to work on crime suppression.

Other concerns that were raised, the number of police on duty, the number of calls placed during the shooting and the gang activity that continues to increase in the Laveen area. One man spoke about the kids who play basketball at the park, saying that most of them are good kids and that instead of talking down to the kids, we should talk to the kids.

Our prayers continue to be with the Gongora family during this difficult time, and we ask that if you do have any information, no matter how insignificant you think the information may be, please contact the police immediately.

Attempted Home Burglary in Laveen

A woman in Laveen, was home alone, when two males began knocking on her door and ringing the door bell. Instead of announcing that she was home, ("Honey, get the door!" or "My husband is coming", even if you are a woman alone) she hid in her closet. This became a more serious as the men proceeded to break into her home, while she was on the phone with PD. She was found in the closet by one of the suspects, both running away, captured by PD. Here is the MAJOR problem...by not announcing herself, she put herself and the police in more danger. The suspect who found her, could have shot her, raped her, taken her hostage, etc. Always announce yourself...if you have to, state that you have called PD and that you are armed. More than likely, the suspect(s) will leave...This woman is lucky to have escaped this incident with only a broken door.

This isn't the first time this has happened. Another woman, pregnant, didn't announce herself, and nearly lost her baby when she fell while running to hide in her car in the garage. This put the neighborhood surrounding Cheatham Elementary on lockdown and the community in fear. This happened in 2009. You may remember the story...one of the suspects ate her breakfast....

Always, Always, Always let the person(s) know that you are home, call 911 if necessary and if you feel safe doing so, announce that you are armed. Keep your home CPTED certified: Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (keep windows clear of brush and weeds, keep lights on at night, display a Window Block Watch Sign *whether you are a member of a Block watch or not*, know your neighbors, avoid blight, pick up your newspapers, collect the solicitations from the front door or garage, keep the power box on the side of your house locked, put a lock on your gate going to your back yard, display "Guard Dog on Duty" signs even if you don't have a guard dog..., etc.) Always keep the front door locked, and the blinds shut (if they can see in, they can Window Shop). If you like, leave a tv or radio on. There are hundreds of things you can do to protect yourself..remember, Crime Prevention Begins At Home....

Parents, this horrible tragedy could have been avoided. Imagine if you will, your innocent child being unsupervised for just a moment and then, without warning, life changes, forever. There should have been someone out there with this child while he was near an open fire. He should have been educated on playing with fire and combustables.

Before this tragedy happens to you, educate, educate, educate. Don't allow your child to be the next victim of a preventable and horrific tragedy.

My prayers go out to this family, who happen to be neighbors of another family who just last year, suffered the same loss, the same way.

Sometimes, life just deals you a winning hand. Today, while getting my nails done, a woman walked in with flyers in hand. She was there to be pampered a little as well, but hey, you know the old saying, "Kill two birds with one stone". Her name, Karen Coughlon, a 14 year cancer survivor. She is now helping to get the word out, the word that one day, cancer WILL be eliminated.

Well Laveen, here is your chance to come together for a wonderful cause, and a hope to stamp out cancer once and for all. Whether you have known someone with cancer, or you yourself have or survived it, this is the event for you. This is your time to shine.

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is an event that brings people together for a night, to walk or run around the track, raising money for cancer research.

Relay for Life of Laveen will be on April 16, 3pm to April 17, 8am. It will be held at Betty H. Fairfax HS.

Beginning to heal.....

The President was the comforting leader this nation required. His speech brought forth healing, trust and compassion from a Nation that was brought together by a heinous crime. To hear that Gabrielle Giffords had opened her eyes tonight, the people were brought to their knees in prayer and relief. We thanked God, praised his words and hugged each other in celebration. Tonight, a nation stood united in quiet reflection.

As we listened to words about those who died, their lives came into perspective, perhaps in a way we weren't expecting. All of a sudden, hearing their names made us feel as if we had known them all our lives. We heard stories about who they were and what they liked and the lives they led. We began to hurt, and then began to heal.

To hear about the Heroes, Daniel included, we smiled, cried tears of joy and wished we could be that strong should we ever be faced with such horror. To hear the heartfelt speeches of our Governor, Secretary of Homeland Security and others, brought us to a point where we can now begin to put our lives back together. We can now begin the painful process of mourning the dead, continue the prayers for the injured and remember always the way we felt tonight.

From here, we will move forward. We will continue to fight for our beliefs, and argue for our wants. Hopefully, we will learn to be more diplomatic and compassionate. We will learn that no matter our political beliefs, we are all equal. We will learn that everyone is entitled to their opinion and that it doesn't mean we can hurt them if we don't agree.

Commander's Community Leaders Meeting

News flash: Assistant Chief Jeri Williams is leaving the Phoenix Police Department and heading to Oxnard, California as the Chief of Police. Assistant Chief Anderson will be taking over and is set to retire in April.

News from the Commander:

Crime in 300 Precinct is down 24%

Officer Kral, who was injured on the I-10 in a motorcycle crash, is still in St. Joes’ Hospital in the ICU. It may be a while before he is able to return to active duty.

Officer Jennifer Eastman has returned to active duty after taking personal time off for medical reasons.

News from Lt. Carlson:

In December:

o 31 Squad NET Team: 22 Felony arrests netting 70 felony charges

§ 5 search warrants

§ 6 vehicles impounded

§ $150,000 in cash was seized

§ Numerous drugs were taken off the street

o 32 Squad NET Team: 3 suspects were arrested in connection with a rash of jewelry store robberies

§ With help from the DPS Task Force, numerous drugs were taken off the street.

o 33 Squad NET Team: A month long task force aimed at reducing property crimes netted 16 arrests, used 700 man hours.

§ Numerous drugs were taken off the street

During New Years Eve, 2 arrests for Shannon’s Law Violations were made, and 700 community contacts made.

Public Comments or Questions:

The biggest frustration for the PD is trying to get the “Big Fish” or the “Hat Trick” (guns, drugs, cash and people)

3 juveniles were arrested for property crimes. Property crimes were, but, not limited to, AC Unit thefts and thefts from abandoned homes

It is not illegal to be homeless. Don’t give change to homeless, give them the “Real Change not Spare Change” card with resources to help them listed on it. If panhandlers are in shopping centers or commercial centers, the property owner needs to be the one to have them trespassed, unless they are being threatening or a nuisance, then a citizen can call 911 or Crime Stop to have them trespassed.

There is a barber shop that is handing out flyers in the area of 51^st Ave and Southern, in Laveen, and it has been reported that some of the people passing them out are breaking into homes. It is important to acknowledge people who knock on your door, at least letting them know that someone is home.

Councilman Nowakowski is going to be working with Commander Parra to host a Crime Summit at the Phoenix Police Department Academy near South Mountain in February or March.

Rogers Ranch Elementary Coming to Laveen!!

The school, named after the Rogers family of Laveen, will be located north of Vineyard, east of 47th Ave., in the heart of the Rogers Ranch Community. New Businesses coming to Laveen!!

51st Ave is considered one of the major gateways into Laveen. On the NE corner of 51st Ave and Baseline, you have the Burger King and the Liberty Tax Service. Until recently, that was pretty much it. The Lightwear Christian Store has been open for several months. There is now a church, Christlike Life Church on the NE corner of the center, and next to the Christian store a Nail salon is getting set to open. Just south, two more businesses, Water N Ice and Think Wireless.

Federico's will be opening up at 35th Ave and Baseline. They specialize in Mexican food, and from what I am told, they are pretty good! Villa's Mexican food opened up across from PetCo, and let me tell you, so WORTH it!! Love their sonoran hotdogs and quesadillas!! LA Fitness is now up and running, and based on the number of cars in the parking lot each day, not doing to shabby!

There is still empty retail, nearly 500,00 sq ft in Laveen alone, so, if you know of someone who is looking to open up a unique business, (no more nail salons or banks, please) have them come to Laveen. We could use a really nice sit down mom and pop resteraunt, a unique antique store, etc.

Season of Safety

Ok, so Christmas is like, 21 days away. Are you done with your Christmas Shopping? Are you done decorating the tree, putting lights on the house, etc?

Well, I can tell you this, the criminals aren't done yet, and you could be their next victim. How do you protect yourself? Simple, be smart and cautious. This is the time of year when we forget to do the things that protect us. We forget to lock our vehicles, we leave our curtains open at night, we don't destroy the box the Wii came in, in short, we advertise. Don't forget that by just being cautious, you lessen the chance of becoming a victim of crime.

When out shopping, don't leave any valuables in view. Hide them, or better yet, take them home and lock them up. If out after dark, which happens before 6pm, go with someone, and park under a light, as close to the door as possible, even at the grocery store.

Daytime crime seems to be on the rise in the Laveen area. Burglaries are happening, vehicle thefts are happening. We can all prevent them by taking away the opportunities! Remember, you can remain anonymous when you call the police, and you don't have to give your name when reporting crimes to Silent Witness.

Laveen is gorgeous, lets keep it that way by taking pride and not being afraid to report crime and working together to get the information out there about what is going on in our communities.

In the coming weeks, many of us will return to the Malls, buy stuff online and spend lots of money on debit and credit cards. So, read below for some ways to protect yourself!

Wow! I have to admit, I sometimes think I can still smell the turkey I cooked last Thanksgiving, and yet, here it is, upon us once again. And, as we all know, that means that we are going to be going shopping, and maybe not thinking about Crime Prevention. Well, that is where the PNP program comes in. During the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, for those of you that live in Laveen, you will see Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol Volunteers at the Shopping Centers along 51st Ave and Baseline and in the parking lot at LA Fitness.

Beginning Nov. 26th, and running through Dec. 18, PNP Volunteers will be driving, riding bikes and walking through the parking lots to help keep you and your valuables safe. This is our Present to the Village of Laveen, a Season of Safety! However, you still need to lock your vehicle, remove all valuables and park smart! We can't prevent every crime, but, we will be vigilant in our efforts to continue being the best Eyes and Ears for the Phoenix Police Department.

Shots Fired, AGAIN.

For the second time in a month, shots were fired in Rogers Ranch Unit 1. The same family was involved, yet again, no shocker there. The residents are of course, angry and scared. During a Block Watch Meeting, the residents asked what they could do to make things better and to keep this from continually happening. The answer: Communication, not only with each other, but, with the Phoenix Police Department.

The family involved states that they are innocent and that the guests that show up are uninvited, and are the ones doing the shooting. As Officers have stated, the party is your responsibility, especially who is there. If someone came into my home, and I didn't invite them, I would certainly be on the phone with 911! And, if they started congregating in the street and had guns, I would call 911! These people can play innocent all they want, but, the fact is, the shots could have hit an innocent child!

So, here is what we need.... you purchased your home, in the community you live in, because you liked the area, it was close to work, or you just like the rural feel of Laveen. We have gangs, we have drugs, we have CRIME. It is time for all of us to take responsibility and call the Police when we see or hear anything suspicious. Let's all work together to make Laveen beautiful again.... note the title of this blog....

Phoenix Police Sergeant Found Dead

Phoenix Police Sgt. Sean Drenth

A 12 year veteran with the Phoenix Police Department, disappeard for over an hour. Officers from Phoenix PD and Capitol PD began a search of the downtown area, and sadly, Capitol PD found the Sgt. dead near his marked unit. Today, there is no new information. Some of the thoughts going around are that it may have been suicide, it could have been a drug cartel, criminal syndicate, etc. Whatever it was, it was tragic and horrible. A Police Officer puts his/her life on the line, all the time. They are the ones that rush into situations that you and I run from. Like Firefighters, they are the ones who think of us, before themselves.

Funeral arrangements are still pending. On Friday, Oct. 29 at 8:45pm, PNP volunteers from around the city will meet at the Starbuck's on the NW corner of 51st Ave and Baseline, for a Memorial Group Patrol. Over the past weekend, nearly 30 vehicles were vandalized in Country Glen and Highland at Rogers Ranch. Tires were slashed. Some had 1 tire slashed, others all 4. Some were on the street, others in driveways. Do you know why you didn't hear about it on the news? Simple. Only 2 people, TWO, called the police to make a report.

Police can't help us if they don't know that there is a problem. The mantra of wanting people to think that Laveen is safe and Crime Free is STUPID to say the least! I am sick of hearing people say, if you don't look below the surface, (where the crime is) Laveen is a great place to live. While yes, it is a great place to live, we have CRIME. We have GANGS, DRUGS, GRAFFITI....yes, Virginia, the same things happen here as they do in L.A., New York, etc.

There are shootings, gangs and drugs in our neighborhoods, schools and at our McDonald's. Stop thinking that if it doesn't affect you directly, that it isn't happening, or that you shouldn't care. This is the time for all of us, not just me and a few others, to take responsibility for what is happening in our community. When you see something that doesn't look right, call the police. Stop being afraid.

Thank you to those who participated in our Special Memorial Group Patrol on Friday, Aug. 6. The group patrolled Rogers Ranch Units 2, 4, 8 and Red Hawk. Then patrolled Copper Creek. The group took a moment at the scene of the shooting to reflect and give thanks to the Officer who gave his life on July 28, 2010, Chandler Detective Carlos Ledesma.

Shooting in South Phoenix

A block watch President is checking her mail, heads home and realizes that her life will forever be changed. As she walks in the door, her phone is ringing, and the voice on the other end, quivering with fear. She is told that there has been a shooting next door. The neighbor continues by saying that a suspect is driving away. By the time the President gets to her front door, a man lay dead, just three doors down, three officers are being rushed to a hospital, one won't survive and another suspect lay dead in a house.

Sounds like a movie, right? Well, it wasn't. You all have seen the images of three Chandler Undercover Police Officers being rushed to the hospital, one passing away enroute. You have heard the stories on the news about a drug deal gone bad, possibly a robbery. Well, whatever it was, it was horrible and frightening for the residents who live on 23rd Ave and Maldonado in the Copper Creek Community.

Could this have been prevented? Could this all have been stopped? We may never know. Questions rise, like, Why was Chandler doing this undercover operation in Phoenix, and did Phoenix PD know about it? If not, why not? Why were the undercover officers carrying so much cash? Why did they go into the house, away from SWAT?

Now, another funeral. Another wife, two more children and hundreds of co-workers ask why? Why did this happen? Two Chandler Officers have lost their lives this year, two too many!!! Another family ripped apart by a senseless act of murder, all for a few dollars and some pot! These criminals need to stay in prison for life, if not lose their own. The criminals in Arizona need to know that we are not going to put up with this. You won't get away with this!

As you read this, you probably sense my anger and frustration. You would be right. I know that the officers on the street are doing this to protect my family and I, and I can't help but to be angry and frustrated when yet another fine man or woman is killed!!

It is time to stop the game playing. EVERYONE in Laveen, South Phoenix and all over, needs to start calling the police when you hear or see something suspicious. You HAVE to protect yourselves and look out for your neighbors. You know when something is wrong, you know when something isn't right, so take the responsibility of calling!! Don't give criminals the opportunity to get comfortable in your neighborhood!

Ready for a new Precinct??

Ready or not, it's coming! As of August 29th, changes are going to happen, ready or not!! You, who live in Laveen, will no longer be part of the South Mountain Precinct. You will be part of the Estrella Park Precinct. Our new Commander, Mike Parra, is a community man, and I can not wait to work with him! I will forever miss Commander Alexander and Lt. Kurtenbach!!! Our new Lt., Grady Carlson, is also ready to help alleviate the worries of many, and to be there for our community.

At the new precinct, located N of Lower Buckeye and on 99th Ave, is beautiful! There is a huge community room there for us to use....I will be using it, A Lot!!! I look forward to the change with deep appreciation for what we have had in the South Mountain Precinct, and with hopes for a wonderful future!!

Crime On The Rise??

In a few weeks, Laveen will become part of the new 300 Precinct. With this switch comes a lot of questions: Will the PD still respond to our calls in a timely manner? Will we be more vulnerable? Will we see an increase in crime and a decrease in officers?

I can answer all of these questions with one word: YES, ok three words, AND NO. How do we keep crime down, and keep our sanity?? By being active. By being a good witness when calling the PD. By calling PD. With change, comes apprehension. Doesn't have to be that way, but, it is human nature. If you haven't seen the new precinct, go check it out....2111 S 99th Ave (99th Ave and Lower Buckeye). Police officers don't respond to calls from the precinct. They go to Roll Call, and immediately head out on the streets.

As for the PNP program and Block Watch, there won't be a change that will affect daily operations. You will have a new Community Programs Officers, as Melissa will remain in 400, so turning in your logs to a new CPO is the only real change. I am hoping to sit on the Oral Board to sustain a new CPO, someone that I will be working closely with, and will get the community to meet. Crime Alerts will continue to go out, and as always, I can't send them, if I don't get them....

Crime is an ever present entity. However, WE can ALL make a difference, by just being pro-active. I know we don't like to call the police when we see a car driving slowly through our neighborhoods, but what if that car is full of people just looking to burglarize your home? Call the police, anytime you see something that doesn't look right, or sound right! Remember the saying, Squeaky wheel gets the grease? It is TRUE. Keep SQUEAKING!! It may be frustrating at times, but don't give up!

PNP Group Patrol in Memory of Fallen Officers

Members of the Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol Program got together, on Friday, May 28, 2010, to honor the memory of Fallen Police Officers throughout Phoenix. The patrol was a great success. I want to thank everyone who showed up, making the night a night to remember!

Fallen Hero

A Phoenix Police Officer was shot near 19th Ave and Indian School this morning. The officer was transported to St. Joe's Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

This is the first death since Officer Shane C. Figueroa was killed in October 2008 at the hands of a drunk driver.

The Officer is reported to have been in his 20's, and was married with two small children, 1 believed to be only 2 weeks old.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Officers' family, and with the Phoenix Police Department, during this tragic time.

Our Last PNP Training in Laveen.....

On May 21st, 10 people were certified in Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol. These 10 volunteers are now out there, as the eyes and ears of the Phoenix Police Department, helping us all. The PNP training allows you to effectively observe and report crimes. It also teaches you why the dispatcher you are talking to on the phone, is asking so many questions, and whether the graffiti you are seeing is related to a gang or just a tagger.

I encourage everyone to at least go to the training, even if you don't have plans to ever patrol, you will learn alot of great information and will see things and notice things you never have before. The training is free, the class is informative and I guarantee you, you won't be sorry.

Dobbins is the SCENIC CORRIDOR~No ROOM for Commercial!

John F. Long is proposing a commercial build on the SE corner of 43rd Ave and Dobbins. Whether you have lived in Laveen 25 years, or 1 month, you know that Dobbins is a SCENIC Corridor, and that there is no room for business, or need for it to be there. 43rd Ave and Dobbins is not a major thoroughfare, nor is there enough reason to put another Nail Salon, a bank or grocery store on that particular parcel of land.

Go to www.phoenix.gov and look at the Planning Hearing Officer Schedule for tomorrow, May 19 at 10am. John F. Long attorneys, Gammage and Burnham are proposing to remove the original stipulation, giving them 5 years, expiring this month, to build commercial on that site. Please don't allow this to happen. If you would like to see the proposed stip changes, email me and I will email you a copy of the letter that I recieved in the mail.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend, but the LCRD has voiced its concern, loudly, to the Planning Hearing Officer, and believe me, I agree! We can not allow this, or what next, another gas station, bar or nail salon on Dobbins??

Our latest Laveen Village Group Patrol

On Friday, April 23, 2010, I joined 7 other PNP'rs for a Group Patrol in Laveen! We patrolled the Bougainvillea Golf Course Community, then headed over to Copper Creek. At Copper Creek, we encountered suspicious activity, and called Crime Stop (602-262-6151). The police arrived, and found that everything was ok, at that time. From there, we patrolled Rogers Ranch Units 2, 4 and 8.

Each time we do these group patrols, I know that the night won't be boring, and it never is! This is a great group of people and if it wasn't for them, I don't think I would enjoy this as much as I do! We always have a great time and catching the bad guy is just icing on the cake!

Being a part of the PNP Program allowed me to be trained on being effective as the Eyes and Ears of the Phoenix Police Department. During my time as a PNP Volunteer, myself and my partner, Robert, have recovered a stolen vehicle, before the owner knew it was stolen! We turned in information to the Phoenix PD that later resulted in a chop shop being busted up! We have caught several taggers, and thanks to the Maryvale PNP volunteers who patrolled with us last month, a woman, driving drunk, with a glass of wine in her console, a large hole in her right front tire, and a WARRANT, was arrested!

Jailing Juveniles and the Budget

I know that we should give them all a chance, but there are just times that you have to consider locking the teen up, and consider extensive counseling to break the criminal cycle. The following was sent to me in an email...I hope that you will read it, and consider the facts.

Budget plan shifts cost of jailing juveniles to cities,
counties

Lawmakers are tossing around a budget plan that would shutter the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections, put counties in charge of incarcerating juveniles and shift some of the cost to municipalities. The plan has yet to be released to the public, but the League of
Cities and Towns sent an e-mail on March 2 to warn its members that lawmakers were considering taking $22 million from cities and towns to offset the expenses counties would incur by taking over the state’s responsibility of jailing juveniles. The money would be taken from sales tax revenue the state shares with cities and towns every year. The state would then transfer the money to counties.
According to an analysis prepared by the Arizona League of Cities
and Towns, Phoenix would lose $6.7 million in fiscal 2011, Tucson would lose $2.4 million,
and Mesa would lose $2 million. One Republican leader declined to comment on the specifics of the budget, but acknowledged there was a component in the budget to shut down the Department of Juvenile Corrections.
“It’s kind of in transit right now, so I’m really not at liberty to (comment),” said House Majority Whip Andy Tobin, a Republican from Paulden.
Gov. Jan Brewer in January proposed closing down the Department of Juvenile Corrections and transferring its inmates to county detention centers. John Arnold, the governor’s budget director, said doing so would save the state $63.3 million next year.
The state faces a nearly $3 billion budget shortfall in fiscal 2011, as well as a $700 million deficit in fiscal 2010. Republican legislative leaders have cancelled scheduled committee hearings this week to focus on budget work, and many anticipate Brewer will call a special session so lawmakers can quickly address budget bills.
Rep. John Kavanagh, who chairs the House Appropriations Committee, said he expected his
committee to hear budget bills this week.
“Optimistically, tomorrow. If not, then Thursday,” the Fountain Hills Republican said.
Although details of the fiscal 2011 budget plan have not yet been made public – Tobin said that would happen once all Republican lawmakers had been briefed on the proposal – Republicans have said for weeks that it would be very similar to the budget
proposal released by Brewer in January.
The budget will include a backup plan to close the deficit if voters reject a temporary sales
tax increase that will be on the ballot on May 18. If the tax increase doesn’t pass, lawmakers are planning to reduce spending by another $900 million to close the deficit.

Where have I been?

Ok, I know that lately I haven't been updating this page as much, but hey, there hasn't been much going on. We had the parade in early February, then the 58th Annual Laveen Pit BBQ in late February, (meat was awesome, weather cooperated and people were fun!), but other than that, not a whole lot going on.

With the proposed Budget cuts, many of us have been to hearings, City Council Chambers, and, in last ditch efforts to achieve what we want, meeting with our Councilman. Homes are still being foreclosed, burglarized and vandalized. Cars are still being stolen, and people are still being cautious. Times don't change and the weather sure doesn't play a role in preventing crime. The rainiest days can be the busiest for the men and women in Law Enforcement, MCSO and Phoenix PD, respectively. So, you see, there just hasn't been much to report.

I used to do the local Crime ALERTS....people have stopped reporting those to me, and unless I hear from others, I don't know what is going on. Some people must have had me pegged for "lil Miss Know-It-All", but hey, that wasn't me, sure isn't now. If I don't get them, I can't send them on, so Crime ALERTS have essentially gone away.

LAHOA (Laveen Association of HOA's ) still meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, at Cesar Chavez High, but now with being the only representative for the Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board for South Mountain Precinct, I can't attend those meetings, so updates aren't getting done there, either....not good. Don't feel as though I am being pulled in hundreds of directions, but people are just getting complacent, and not worrying about the stuff we did just 2 months ago.

I am now focusing most of my time on my daughter, Kylie, who is being home schooled. I just didn't agree with her 9 day suspension from school, over a stupid incident. She was on the Honor Roll all year, and had no history of violence and rather than looking at her case on an individual basis, she was given capitol punishment! She now spends her day with me, and I love being able to be her "learning coach".

Well, instead of rambling on, I think I will close by saying....

Send me Crime ALERTS!!! I miss sending those out!!! Send me Calendars' with your Block Watch meeting dates and times, so that I can update the community, like I used to....where is Carol Pacey when you need her?? Boy, do I miss her.

Laveen Village Parade 2010 is now in the books!

Grand Marshalls, Harry and Carolyn Tolliver, led the parade, with 97 entrants behind them! As I sat in line, number 40, I was excited about showing Laveen that Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol was here to stay....

Some of the dignitaries included, Vice-Mayor Michael Nowakowski, Ruben Gallego and Officer Mario Ancich.

The theme for this years parade was Red, White and Blue, Stars and Stripes Forever, so with a flag draped over the back of my PT Cruiser, I headed down the parade route with cheers and claps from the crowd! This was truly a proud moment for me, as I was able to show Laveen that I do love this Village and that I am committed to crime suppression and Block Watch!

If you weren't able to attend, you missed a lot! Everyone who had entered the parade had worked extremely hard to show off the best floats! I couldn't have been a judge, because everyone would have won!! Thank you to the Laveen Lions, Laveen Community Council, Spectators along Dobbins and the 97+ entrants who worked hard to make this parade the best one yet!

Operation CRIPpled Blues a Great Success!!

Today, 02/05/10, I was invited to attend a special presentation at the South Mountain Precinct. While there, we were told of the Phoenix Police Department teaming up with Arizona Department of Public Safety and Arizona State Capitol Police, to arrest members of criminal street gangs....

As of the press conference at 3pm, 23 of 34 Search Warrants had been successfully served. This was part of a 4 year long investigation into the West Side City Crips. With help from the DPS GIITEM Program, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, The FBI Violent Street Gang Task Force and the Air National Guard, 700 pounds of marijuana, $4,200 in cash, 10 illegal weapons and 16 vehicles have been siezed. During the past week, the police have also arrested 17 prostitutes and 19 Johns, 118 additional arrests including 30 documented criminal street gang members!
